Cloth, and similar material, masks do not provide a snug fit between the mask and face, allowing airborne particles to escape into the surrounding environment on exhalation.

Basic, single dimension designs result in simple flow paths that are susceptible to particles by-passing filters.

Exhale valves are incorporated to improve breathability but, as a result, deliberately allow for all airborne particles to escape into the surrounding environment on exhalation.

Durability. Cloth, and similar materials, wear easily. The rate of this deterioration increases with washing, especially at temperatures required to kill viruses, rapidly reducing the efficacy of the mask.

Reusability. For masks to be reusable they will require cleaning. Depending on the material and mask design, this process can reduce the efficacy of the mask. The process also results in the mask being unavailable for a portion of the day, depending on the duration of washing and drying.

The development process of the INEX mask leverages off of the diving industry breathing apparatus configurations to ensure an ergonomic and tight-fitting design. The mask is produced through an injection-moulded process reducing the potential for product flaws that result from human error. The soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material utilised provides a non-collapsible, firm, yet comfortable, seal between mask and face. And the elasticated, adjustable straps ensure a form-fitting seal. The combination of these elements has been engineered to improve the interaction of the mask and face and limit the escape of airborne particles.

The designed particle separator system built into the INEX mask uses an elaborate flow path to help prevent moisture droplets from bypassing the filter.

The INEX design does not include an exhale valve deliberately, to reduce the escape of airborne particles into the surrounding environment.

INEX masks are incredibly durable. The thick mounting and robust fastening system of the mask is highly resistant to typical wear and tear. The thermoplastic elastomer is capable of withstanding temperatures much higher than that required to kill viruses (initial results from WHO studies indicate that temperatures of 56 °C for 15 minutes are required to kill approximately 10 000 units of the SARS coronavirus). INEX masks, as a result, can be washed using various methods with no negative impacts on the mask’s efficacy.

The INEX masks are made from a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material that is easily washed and can withstand high temperatures with no impact to the mask. This allows for quick cleaning. The material is also hydrophobic, allowing for quick drying.

Medical grade antiviral filters, ideal for medical personnel.

The Breathetex 140-P is a mechanically bonded/needle punched non-woven product which provides filtration properties in the use of face and respirator masks. The non-woven layer has the ability to attract and trap dust and foreign particles including protection against droplets created during coughing or sneezing. This method of manufacture creates fine ‘pores’ enabling breathability and personal protection for the wearer.

This product is widely used as an effective filtration layer in the FFP2 moulded respirator mask and tested as a substrate according to SANS 50149:2003.

Easy breathing & convenient single-use filter pad.

Manufactured from non-woven 140gsm Breathetex 140-P140-P PET/PP blend, Tested under ISO14644 Barrier Efficacy Test, Rated excellent for Barrier and Air Flow.

In cases where lower protection is needed or in the absence of official filter pads, suitable household fabrics or even disposable cotton pads can be used. Any fabric recommended by government agencies for use in fabric masks can make a good filter material. It is best to do some research but the general recommendation, based on numerous studies, is that multiple layers of tightly woven fabric are better than a single layer. If you hold the fabric up to the light, the less light it lets through, the better. However, it is essential that the filter lets through the air easily enough to maintain easy breathing. Some possible options that have been suggested are cotton t-shirt fabric, cotton flannel or spun-woven polyester or polypropylene.

The following signals are good indicators of whether filters should be changed, depending on the type of filter:

  • For civilian use, in cases of continuous use, it is recommended that the mask is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and the filter pad is replaced daily after use; and/or
  • When breathing becomes difficult and the respirator becomes uncomfortable to use; and/or
  • You start to smell or sense breathing in any pollutants; and/or
  • The filter has been damaged in any way (change immediately if damaged)
  • In high and dangerous contaminated areas, filters must be changed frequently before you can smell or sense breathing in of any pollutants. It is better to have a measure of contamination and schedule regular filter changes, than the breath in contamination. If still in doubt always consult your supervisor, or occupational health professional.
